What we'll do
Fire is one of the oldest tools there is — and there's real science to making it burn clean, hot, and safe. In this session, families build a small fire in a rocket stove (a clever design that makes a little wood go a long way) and cook up a snack together.
Along the way, kids learn how air, fuel, and heat work together, and how to be calm and careful around fire.
We'll explore
- What fire needs to burn — and burn cleanly
- Why a rocket stove is so efficient
- Fire safety, hands-on and unhurried
- Cooking a simple snack over the flames
You'll leave with
- A full belly and a new respect for fire
- Real fire-safety skills
- An understanding of off-grid cooking
Who it's for
Kids ages 7–12 and one grown-up per child. Grown-ups stay hands-on for this one — we work with fire as a team.
A kid-and-caregiver take on the off-grid cooking sessions at Waterbear Field School. Please let us know about any food allergies when you register.
